Calcutta, my first love and my last refuge. A chaos called Calcutta,a never-ending love named Calcutta. Though the city is now officially called Kolkata, I somehow still love calling it "Calcutta".
Amidst all the cacophony, there is definitely something soothing. Amidst all the weariness, there is certainly something rejuvenating in the "City of Joy", a name by which it has always been fondly referred to.
Being born and brought up in Calcutta, I can feel every breath the city takes, when its skies go dark and when its sun shines the brightest.People who stay in Calcutta may share a love-hate relationship with it but someone who is not from Calcutta but has visited the city will find it perplexing and intriguing.
One of the most symbolic things about this city would definitely be "The Yellow Taxi.".We might complain of its nuisances every now and then, but where else can we find something so Calcutta-ish?
This city is timelessly classic. Sometimes you feel it to be fast, although not as fast as any Mumbaikar would want it to be and sometimes you will feel that it's still living in an era that's long lost. The city is a celebration of human existence and a journey called life.
This write-up on my city would be incomplete if I don't shed light on certain places to which I owe a lot of memories and nostalgia. "Park Street", my favorite place in the city makes me an ecstatic Calcuttan. Be it the brownies at Flury's or the Chello Kebabs at Peter Cat, this place will always be a personification of vitality.
Next comes, "New Market", a place which is quite vintage and yet is new each time. Such an oxymoron, phew! If you have never strolled the streets of this place, with your besties in you college days, you haven't lived a part of your life.
The city has many lifelines.Be it a bustling "Howrah Bridge"
or an ever-pacing "Central Avenue", this city is always in motion.
The City of Joy has been written about a gazillion times. As old as 300 years, the culture of this city is inexplicable. The relics of the British Era still remain. "Victoria Memorial", one of the city's landmarks can vouch for this fact.
Calcutta is a natural charmer. A visit to the "Princep Ghat" will soothe your tired soul and entice you to come again and again.
A yellow taxi is not the only unique thing about Calcutta, there are other things too. The remains of the Colonial rule can also be found in a "Hand-pulled Rickshaw".
A tram ride is an epitome of the old-calcuttan charm. It's a must if you want to explore the city in a whole new different way.
I am eternally in love with the City of Joy. There can be no other place where I want to live and die. A city that shocks and enthralls me at the same time. An enigma named Calcutta, a dilemma called Calcutta. My city- The City of Joy.
